Phelps Confirmed As First Youth Olympics Ambassador
23 February 2010

Michael Phelps has become the first official ambassador for the Youth Olympic Games (YOG) ahead of the inaugural event in Singapore later this year. Phelps’ agreement with the YOG follows the announcement last week that he has signed a lucrative endorsement deal with Under Armour until 2013, thought to be worth at least US$7.5 million. The new role marks a significant boost for Phelps’ profile, which took a hit last year when he was suspended for three months by USA Swimming after a photograph apparently showing him using illegal drugs was published in a British newspaper.

“The Youth Olympic Games is an excellent initiative, not only for the athletes competing, but also those who are inspired to get into sport and be more active,” said Phelps. “I am delighted that I have been given the opportunity to become the first official ambassador of the Youth Olympic Games, and can’t wait to get working with the YOG team to promote the first event this summer.” The Games will run from August 14-26, and International Olympic Committee (IOC) president Jacques Rogge said he was “delighted” to have the most successful Olympian of all time on board. “Preparations for the inaugural edition in Singapore are on track, and the IOC is looking forward to welcoming 3,600 athletes to Singapore this summer,” he added.
